Finland’s labour market is Europe’s weak link
Facts
Eurostat’s comparable measure put Finnish unemployment at 11%, against 6.2% for the EU; Statistics Finland separately found 39,000 more unemployed people than a year earlier. The Bank of Finland still forecasts 1.7% growth in 2026.
InterpretationThe figures weaken claims that the recovery has already reached households, but they do not prove permanent decline. Policy leverage lies in work incentives, housing mobility and investment conditions; the constraint is that austerity can suppress demand before supply reforms bear fruit.
