HSBC tests whether AI can replace relationship-heavy finance roles.

Facts

HSBC is considering cuts of about half of UK wealth-management specialist and management roles and as much as 70% of adviser roles, according to the Financial Times as reported by Reuters; consultation is still under way.

InterpretationThis is more consequential than generic AI productivity claims because the proposed reductions reach client-facing professional work. The counterweight is execution risk: regulated advice, trust and liability may limit how much automation can safely absorb.
