Europe grows, but France enters its consolidation trap
Facts
Euro-area GDP grew 0.4% in the third quarter, twice the forecast, while France contracted 0.1%; French business investment fell 0.6% as the government pursued roughly €43 billion of consolidation.
InterpretationThe aggregate euro result is stronger than the stagnation narrative, but it also weakens Paris’s case for delay. France must restore fiscal credibility without crushing investment; the constraint is political fragmentation, while the second-order risk is a widening competitiveness gap inside the currency union.
