Finland’s fiscal debate moves from a target to a list of losers
The Finnish Ministry of Finance published roughly 400 options for the next coalition talks, including abolishing child benefit or supplements for about €1.2 billion in savings and changes to index-linked spending worth about €2 billion over a decade; officials frame the adjustment need at €8–11 billion.
InterpretationOfficials have exposed the scale of the adjustment rather than pretending efficiency alone can close it. Parties now have to choose between benefit cuts, tax rises and slower indexation; however, these are options, not an enacted programme, and front-loaded cuts could weaken a soft labour market.
