Germany’s industrial mood improves despite the energy shock
Facts
German businesses lifted the Ifo business-climate index for a sixth month, to 90.2 in October from 89.9, in a Wall Street Journal report covering about 9,000 surveyed firms.
InterpretationThe improvement is evidence against a simple European-collapse narrative: fiscal investment and manufacturing demand still provide traction. But a sentiment index is not output, and high energy costs plus borrowing rates can still turn tentative confidence into postponed investment.
