Stubb opens a channel to Putin without freelancing from Kyiv
Facts
Alexander Stubb and Jonas Gahr Støre held a 90-minute call with Vladimir Putin, urged de-escalation and coordinated with Ukraine; Stubb called Volodymyr Zelenskyy afterward, while the Kremlin reported no compromise.
InterpretationFinland’s leverage is credibility with both NATO partners and a neighbour it cannot wish away. Coordination with Kyiv limits the risk of a separate Nordic track, but Putin can use contact to test allied divisions. Dialogue is useful only if it produces verifiable steps, not prestige for the caller.
